- Spain overtook Japan in the ranking and is now in the lead with a life expectancy of almost 86 years, while the US fell 21 places.
All countries in the world will probably have increased their life expectancy by 2040, according to a new report published in The Lancet by researchers from the University of Washington.
As well as predicting life expectancy, the study gives us a rough idea of the overall state of health from one nation to another.
If current behavioral trends persist, Spain will have beaten every other country in the ranking with an average life expectancy of 85.8 years. The country has even beaten Japan, which is now down from first place to second place since 2016.
On the other hand, the US fell 21 spots from 2016, ranking 64th in the world ranking.
Below are the 25 countries whose life expectancy will be longest by 2040, from lowest to highest.
