College Students Graduates Graduation

  • When undertaking mathematics, the establishment you choose for your studies can have a considerable impact.
  • To produce its Global Ranking of Mathematics 2018, ShanghaiRanking looked at factors including how many Field Medalists had studied at each institution.
  • The ranking shows that the majority of the best universities for mathematics are in the US.

If you're hoping to study maths and one day hope to get a Fields Medal of your own, the establishment you select for your studies can make all the difference.

After looking at over 1600 universities across 83 countries, ShanghaiRanking's has produced its Global Ranking of Mathematics 2018— to qualify, universities needed a minimum number of research publications between 2012 and 2016.

In order to produce the mathematics ranking, the number of former students and teachers who had received either a Nobel Prize or Fields Medal — a prize awarded to up to four mathematicians below 40 years of age at the International Congress of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) every four years — was counted, as well as the number of researchers most cited within their own fields and those whose work had been published in select scientific reviews.

Here are the 17 best universities to study math according to the ranking.

We tried 4 fast food chain's apple pies — and had a clear favorite

$

apple pieBetween milkshakes, chocolate chip cookies, and ice cream, you can definitely get your sweet fix at the fast food drive-thru window. But you might be overlooking one very delicious option: apple pie. Although they vary by restaurant, a lot of fast food places offer up apple-flavored desserts, so which one is the best?

We tried apple pies from McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Arby’s, and Popeye’s, and just about the only thing they had in common was their apple flavor. We thought one was far tastier than the rest — read on to see the results.

Taco Bell’s Caramel Apple Empanada was only one dollar.

If you love apples and anything deep fried, you’d probably love Taco Bell’s twist on apple pies — their 280-calorie Caramel Apple Empanada. Priced at just $1.00 each, you get a pocket of apple filling, but how does it stack up?

While this dessert is served warm and has a nice crunch when you bite in, there aren’t many actual apples involved; in fact, this one is mostly just filling. It's also not the most attractive of all the fast food apple pies we tried, so if you’re looking for something Instagrammable, this isn’t it.

Popeye’s Cinnamon Apple Pie is covered in cinnamon.

At $1.29, Popeye’s Cinnamon Apple Pie has a higher price point than Taco Bell’s version, but it’s also closer to what you’d expect from a traditional pie.

The 236-calorie dessert comes covered in cinnamon, which is good if you love cinnamon … but if you don’t, you’re probably not going to like this, especially since, in my opinion, it does create a bit of an unpleasant aftertaste.

The pie is buttery and crispy at the same time, though, and the filling is perfect.

Arby’s Apple Turnover was nice and flaky.

With a vanilla icing drizzle on the outside, this pie sure is pretty and if you love a flaky pastry, this is the one for you.

Arby’s turnover costs $1.39 and is the most expensive of the apple pies we tried, and it also has the highest calorie count at 430. Unfortunately, it also has less flavor than the others. But the icing is amazing, and so is the flaky outside. Instagrammable? For sure — and it feels more like a real dessert than the other pies, too.

  • There are plenty of college rankings and ways to find out the best colleges in the US.
  • These colleges enroll the smartest students in the country, according to SAT and ACT scores.
  • California Institute of Technology took the top spot, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Which schools have the brightest young minds in the nation?

To find out, we asked Jonathan Wai, Assistant Professor and Endowed Chair at the University of Arkansas. He created a ranking exclusively for Business Insider of the smartest US colleges and universities based on the schools' average standardized test scores.

While these tests are often criticized, research shows that both the SAT and ACT are good measures of general cognitive ability, since they rely on a person's ability to reason. Therefore, these scores give a reasonable snapshot of a school’s overall smarts.

This ranking included all the schools that report average SAT and ACT scores to the government. ACT scores were converted to the SAT scale for the purposes of this analysis.

See more detail on methods and limitations here

Once again, the Pasadena-based California Institute of Technology took the top spot on the list, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, University of Chicago, Vanderbilt University, and Yale University rounded out the top five schools.

RANKED: 14 of the best shark movies of all time

The Meg Warner Bros. EntertainmentWith the release of "The Meg," shark movies are hot right now. So we looked at the Metacritic score for each of these films (not including direct-to-video or made-for-TV movies — sorry, "Sharknado") and critic's reviews to see how these shark movies rank.

Here are the best shark movies of all time, ranked.

14. "Jaws: The Revenge" (1981) wasn’t the best.

"‘Jaws: The Revenge’ is not simply a bad movie, but also a stupid and incompetent one — a ripoff." - Roger Ebert

13. "Shark Lake" (2015) seemed like it was edited for broadcast.

"Shark Lake lacks bite. Its audience doesn't even get to revel in blood and guts; the whole thing seems like it was edited for broadcast." - Martin Tsai, Los Angeles Times

12. "Shark Night 3D" (2011) had some disappointing shark attack scenes.

"Unlike his ‘Snakes on a Plane,’ director David R. Ellis' sharks-in-a-lake thriller displays little sense of its scenario's camp potential. Gore, too, is in short supply on account of the pic's PG-13 rating, which renders the attack scenes nearly toothless." - Rob Nelson, Variety

  • Living and working conditions vary around the world, with differing visa requirements, paid maternity leave and cost of living.
  • WorldFirst, a global leader in international money transfers, analysed seven countries to see how the US compares with the rest of the world in terms of living and working conditions.
  • The organisation looked at job demand, accessibility of visas, the cost of living, and working conditions.

Seeking new opportunities abroad can be exciting, but living and working conditions vary around the world, with differing visa requirements, paid maternity leave and cost of living.

In the US, the average cost of rent stands at $1,671, while transport comes in at around $94. Compared with other countries, the main sectors in which jobs are in demand include mathematics, information technology, health, teaching, and writing.

Different visas are available depending on whether you have a job offer and, often, you need at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Visas can be renewed indefinitely depending on where you're from and can allow an applicant's spouse to live and work in the US.

WorldFirst, a global leader in international money transfers, analysed seven countries to see how the US compares with the rest of the world in terms of the jobs in demand, accessibility of visas, the cost of living, and working conditions.

Here's a look at the comparisons.

SEE ALSO: 17 countries where teachers can earn the highest starting salary

1. Germany

"Health specialists and engineers may secure a visa more easily, as these jobs are in demand, but other workers will have to prove their job could not be filled by an EU worker," says Worldfirst.

The opportunity to work in Germany often also comes with enjoying generous maternity and sick leave benefits.

Rent: $1,077

Transport: $111

Jobs in demand: Technology specialists, health professionals, and engineers.

Visa requirements: Working Holiday visas are available for those between 18 and 30 for up to 12 months. People from outside Germany can, with a firm job offer and a vocational qualification, apply for a residence permit for general employment.

Working conditions: Employees are entitled to 14 weeks maternity leave on full pay, and full salary for up to six weeks in case of illness.

2. Singapore

"Singapore is popular with finance industry professionals, and its low income tax rates — up to 22% for high earners — make it attractive for businesses and executives," says WorldFirst.

"Even better, expats are subject to just a 15% income tax in their first 183 days of employment in Singapore.

"Visas are easy to acquire and are valid for up to two years, but Singapore's popularity among professionals also makes it one of the most expensive countries for rent."

Rent: $2,673

Transport: $99

Jobs in demand: Business and financial professionals, infrastructure constructionists, and marketing consultants.

Visa requirements: An employment pass or "S Card" is valid for up to three years.

Working conditions: Employees on visas or work permits are not entitled to a pension scheme in Singapore.

3. Hong Kong

"Hong Kong has less favourable working conditions, with limited annual, maternity and paternity leave," says WorldFirst.

"Sales, information technology, marketing and finance roles are sought after in Hong Kong, but Working Holiday visas are limited."

Rent: $3,210

Transport: $81

Jobs in demand: Finance and accounting, engineering and marketing and sales.

Visa requirements: General Employment Policy visas are available for those outside of Hong Kong, provided they have a reasonable job offer, a good academic and professional background, and where the job cannot be filled locally. Working Holiday visas for those between 18 and 30 years of age are available for set numbers of people.

Working conditions: Employees are only entitled to between seven and 14 days of annual leave, and 10 weeks of paid maternity leave — provided they've been with their employer for at least 40 weeks. New fathers are entitled to a mere three days' paternity leave.

According to German online removals startup Movinga, one of the most common reasons a person might choose to move is a new job.

To find where people are moving to for promising new opportunities, Movinga ranked cities based on several different qualities.

Their analysis focuses on three key areas: the economic health of startups and established businesses, the general standard of living of the city's population — including disposable income and health benefits — and, finally, the inclusion of young people, women, and expatriates in the workforce.

The final index ranks the top 100 cities according to the total score of job opportunities, from the highest to the lowest, indicating the score for each factor. From those, here are the 21 best cities in the world in which to find a job.

  • Swiss institute IMD Business School has published its fifth edition of the World Talent Ranking.
  • The aim of the ranking is to focus on how countries develop, attract, and retain highly qualified professionals.
  • The report analysed 63 countries based on three different indicators.

IMD Business School has published the fifth edition of its annual World Talent Report.

Looking at 63 countries around the world, the global talent ranking evaluates the performance of countries in developing, attracting, and retaining highly qualified professionals.

Fields such as education, workplace training, language skills, international experience, quality of life, and salaries, were analysed in each country within the report, amongst other factors.

The countries were ranked according to an overall score between 0 and 100 points, which is based on three main indicators, also scored between 0 and 100:

  • Investment and Development: related to expenditure on education, the percentage of teachers per student in a country or the female labour force, among other factors.
  • Appeal: based on the attractiveness of the country to foreign talent, with aspects such as the cost of living, salaries, or employee motivation among some of the factors taken into account.
  • Readiness: measures among other areas the quality of the skills of employees and managers, or the education system.

While the amount of points each country has is ordered from least to most competitive nations and is out of 100, the positions obtained in the different indicators mark each country's position in the ranking, out of the 63 countries analysed.

Below are the 31 countries best at developing, attracting, and retaining the best talent for their companies, according to the 2018 index of IMD, together with their total points out of 100.

To celebrate, Wallethub compared more than 240 cities across the US to determine what the best cities for football fans are, whether they love the NFL or college ball.
